The purpose of the Corrections Conference
“The purpose of the Area 10 Corrections Conference is to serve as both an educational tool and an exchange of information between AA members and corrections-related professionals, as well as those interested in becoming involved in this rewarding area of service work.”
The Area 10 Corrections Conference is a wonderful tradition that was started over 18 years ago by a handful of very dedicated members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Some of whom are still going strong and have contributed immensely to this proven program of recovery that we strive to bring to the alcoholics still suffering behind the walls. We are very grateful for their help.
A Brief History of the Area 10 Corrections Conference
The Colorado Corrections Conferences have provided an opportunity for information sharing, fun, and fellowship for AAs who volunteer to conduct meetings behind the walls of jails, prisons, penitentiaries, and other detention facilities. The history of these annual conferences began in 1988 under the sponsorship of the Area 10 Corrections Committee, and anyone interested is invited to attend. The Corrections Conference Committees have always done an excellent job organizing the 3-day weekend events, which begin with a CDOC training session on Friday morning and an AA speaker in the evening. The full-day Saturday agenda includes panels, workshops, sharing sessions, and other presentations, always with time for good meals, an evening meeting, and an ice cream social. The conferences conclude on Sunday morning after a speaker meeting and closing report. A highlight of the conferences has been the Colorado Department of Corrections inmate panels. These men and women have shared their stories of how they apply the AA Program to their lives while serving time in prison. And panels of former inmates have shared their experience, strength, and hope as they continue to recover on the outside. Speakers include AA volunteers and special guests such as judges, attorneys, sheriffs, program directors, case managers, probation officers, counselors, AA trustees, and representatives from the Department of Corrections and Addiction Recovery Programs, Inc. At each conference, proposals are presented and voted on to determine the location of the following year’s conference. Many areas of the state have served as hosts; would your group or district like to participate in a future event?
